WHAT WE DO
How We Work
The Conservancy’s mission is to connect people to nature by conserving the lands and water on which life depends. We envision a region of thriving natural habitats enjoyed and respected by the people who live in and visit the Inland Northwest.
Our work has helped to permanently protect over 20,000 acres of valuable habitat and more than 40 miles of shoreline throughout our service area. In the pursuit of our conservation priorities we use three main conservation tools: in partnership with willing private landowners we acquire and annually monitor a portfolio of over 50 conservation easements – these are permanent agreements that significantly limit development of high-value habitat lands; we have actively supported the purchase and permanent protection of 35 conservation areas by partner agencies such as Spokane County Parks; and we have bought lands for eventual transfer to partner agencies.
We also offer education and engagement opportunities for our supporters and the general public. This programming includes an ever-evolving and expanding list of outings such as night hikes, birdwatching, star-gazing, geology tours and naturalist-lead field trips. We anticipate that these programs will offer meaningful, place-based engagement opportunities to more than 400 community members in 2019 with expanded participation in coming years.
As a result of a conservation and strategic planning process that is currently underway we have identified three main conservation priorities to guide our ongoing work: we identify and conserve the lands and waters that our native species need to thrive; we use conservation strategies on the land to ensure ongoing supplies of clean, abundant water; and we provide connection to vibrant natural landscapes to promote health and well-being, and to foster active long-term engagement with the land.
We currently operate with a four-person staff supported by a 11-member board and a number of dedicated volunteers.
